It is no secret that in the world of beauty, anti-aging skin care products are cash cows for cosmetic companies. Often, these companies rake in the dough by selling their products with the aid of catchy marketing and a plethora of hyperbole, rather than real results. Companies are competing to find that new “breakthrough” ingredient that gets the beauty industry buzzing. In 2009, plant stem cells began generating tons of interest, taking the industry by storm.
Stem cells are able to differentiate into any type of cell, which means treatments developed with stem cell technology have the potential to repair extensive tissue damage. However, human and animal stem cell research and usage is highly controversial and is often subject to government regulation – in the US, it’s banned from commercial use. As a result, perfectly legal plant stem cell technology became the attractive alternative for cosmetic use.
Last year, we saw several cosmetic companies introduce their new lines of products containing these “green” stem cells, boasting their purported rejuvenation properties. The biggest buzz surrounds the stem cells of a rare Swiss apple, the Malus Domestica from the Uttwiler Spätlauber tree, with scientists claiming this amazing Swiss apple ingredient will turn back the hands of time and removes signs of aging.
The November edition of the United States Vogue magazine went as far as to call the variety “the super-apple”, and asked if the tree could be “the new fountain of youth”. Read more.
Emerge Skin Care Labs has put out the only study conducted on the cells so far. As it happens, the study was performed by Mibelle Biochemistry, which is the ingredient manufacturer for all the companies using Swiss apple stem cells. Mibelle Biochemistry believe their study results prove that the cells can interact with human cells to make the skin look younger by protecting the longevity of existing cells as well as stimulating new skin cells.
Allowing the “science” to do the marketing has proven successful, with major celebrity names – such as Michelle Obama – professing to be fans of the Swiss apple. With the novelty of the discovery of this extremely rare apple (apparently there are only 20 of these trees in the world), the scientific findings and celebrity following, it’s no wonder there has been so much hype around it! Before you go breaking the bank for one of these products (and they are indeed bank-breaking), keep a healthy level of skepticism about you.
Lather’s new ‘Swiss Apple Wrinkle Remedy’ is the least costly in the bunch at only $62, while the luxe brands’ offerings might cause some more severe damage to your wallet, albeit reducing damage to your skin: the Emerge Swiss Apple Stem Cell Serum sets you back $120, followed by Lancôme’s ‘Absolue Precious Cells’ at $145, 3Lab’s ‘Super H Serum’ at $300, and Clark’s Botanicals’ ‘Cellular Lifting Serum’ at $355. I was actually falling for all of this whilst reading a lengthy article penned by a Dr Goldfaden. That is, until I came across Goldfaden Stem Cell Serum and the sweet aroma of life-giving fruit began to smell a bit fishy. Dr G’s article is very detailed and it goes so far as to give us the name of this rare species of tannin-rich apple: Uttwiler Spätlauber.
By now, I was on the alert. A Google search of Uttwiler Spätlauber threw up over 30o [sic] references and not one of them was botanical. In fact, they ALL refer to the invention of a new skincare ingredient. Read more.
